Caterpillar Birthday Cake

This is one of my favorites.  I made it for my 4th kiddo's 1st birthday.  It turned out really cute.

Pretty simple to make:  bake some cupcakes, decorate using various colors of frosting, use some kind of candy for eyes, nose, mouth, and antenna.  Voila!  Creative & simple.  My favorite combination!!!

Fairy House Birthday Cake

Here's the deal:  my cakes are definitely homemade & do NOT look professional.  However, my kids absolutely love to look back though pictures of their special cakes.  They know that I took the time to plan them & create them.  There are imperfections on every single cake.  I have had a few people say "you should sell your cakes" and I think to myself NOPE...  because, the fact is, they do not look like something you would buy.  My point in this blog though is that any mom out there can create a neat, one-of-a-kind cake for their kids that their kids will remember.

So here is Ciara's Fairy House cake... or mushroom cake... toadstool...  whatever.  I was at a loss when trying to decide what to do for her this year.  So I just browsed around online for "girly" ideas...  decided this is possibly the last year she could enjoy something like this...  you know, she is getting all grown up on us.

The cake itself is made of 2 cakes baked in glass bowls.  I made marshmallow fondant for the pink & yellow that you see.  We needed some grass, therefore I made just a little buttercream frosting & dyed it green... Lots of options on grass though.  I am NOT a coconut fan, or I would have bought some of that green dried coconut.

Candy is key in many of my cakes.... This one is no exception.  I bought some marshmallows for the top of the house, nerds candies for the pebbles, mini colored marshmallows around the back of the house, jordan almonds for the larger stones.

I found in the clearance section at Target the little wind-up lady bug & butterfly.  I also bought one of the "fairy" polly pockets.  I'll try to add some closer up pictures in a bit.

Chess Birthday Cake

My boys have been playing chess since they were fairly young... Can't remember now when they started to learn.    Anyway.  I thought it would be fun to do a chess cake.
It was a lot of work.  Simple, but time consuming.  I purchased a candy mold off Amazon.com for pretty cheap, around $5 or so.  Then I used chocolate chips (regular and white) for the candy... I melted in microwave & filled the molds.  refridgerated.  TEDIOUS.
For the board, I made two marshmallow fondants.  The white is pretty easy.  The chocolate was very, very difficult!  Don't think I will do it again using that recipe anyway.
The very fun thing is after the candles were blown out, the boys played a game of chess!  Definitely one of my favorite cakes that I have made.  Worth the work!!

Harry Potter Birthday Cake

Ok, this didn't turn out exactly as I had hoped.  I purchased some "cake markers" that were supposed to work on the frosting... I was planning to write the name of a chapter at the top, along with some text.  These markers that I paid around $10 for did NOT work.  I was very upset & planned to write the manufacturer (Wilton), but never did.... Oh well....  I made the most of it & it still looked cute.

The sorting hat was my favorite thing.... I used some fondant that I had leftover from a birthday a few days earlier.  I just took some plain cocoa and added it to it until it was brown.  then shaped it.

The broomstick is a pretzel with a twizzler (mango flavored, not "twizzler" brand.

I had the glasses leftover from a Harry Potter Halloween Costume.

The owl was a disappointment.  I tried to make one using marshmallows & it did NOT work either.  So you see what I ended up with.

The scarf is fruit rollups & starbursts.

I purchased the Harry Potter Figurine off Ebay or Amazon, can't remember which now.
